Essential Question: What is an additive wood sculpture?
Objective(s): I can create a well-balanced additive face sculpture. I can experiment with a large variety of wood shapes to create a found object additive relief mask inspired by African masks.
Required Materials/Equipment/Technology/Community Resources:
Scrap wood from Unique Model, and Laser Cut scrap wood from Display Pack, old records purchased at garage sales, Latex paint from Xrite, and the use of Unique Model band saws to cut up free scrap wood. Laptop computer to create and present Prezi on subject, hot Glue provided by school.
Prior Knowledge/
Connections:
How many of you know of the large metal sculpture downtown. An additive steel sculpture. Check out these cool African Masks in the Prezi.

ACTIVITY PLAN
1. Warm-up/Review/Connections:
There will be a large pile of laser cut wood scraps on a table. The students will be asked what should we do with this material. Hopefully they will say, “Build Stuff!!” I will present a Prezi. I will ask my students what they see in the images I project, a Visual Thinking Strategy
2. Introduction to Content/Explanation:
I will demonstrate to my students.
I will then ask my students, “ how to do this project, one step at a time.”
3. Presentation/Model the Learning Process:
Students will then create their group project.
I will re-guide some students in the demonstration.
I will then ask this student to show me how to do this project.
4. Scaffolded/Guided Concrete Practice:
Groups of students will start with basic forms and add more detail as the project progresses.
5. Communicative/Collaborative Concrete Practice and Grouping Strategies:
Students will work in a small group to create a well –balanced sculpture without using the hot glue, on a piece of mat broad and each of the pieces will be photographed. The pieces will all be mixed back in.
6. Independent Concrete Practice/ Application: Day 2
Students independently will create a well –balanced sculpture without using the hot glue, on a piece of matt broad and each of the pieces will be photographed. The best pieces will start to be hot glued together.
7. Assessment:
Students will be assessed on how well created a well-balanced additive face sculpture and how they experimented with a large variety of wood shapes to create a found object additive relief mask.
8. Wrap-Up/ Concluding Activity:
Some students will be asked to describe how they created project.
Students will then clean up and put all materials away.
Students will join in a discussion and review of their fellow classmates creations.

Based on the ability of students, instruction will be adjusted as the lesson develops and what I learned will be used to adjust my lessons plans to the students capabilities.
