3D Printer funded by Michigan youth arts
Thanks to Michigan Youth Arts and the Michigan Council of Arts and Cultural Affairs for our an Arts Equipment & Supplies award of $650. With these funds we received a 3D printer to inspire our students to become part of the future, as they learn to create using Tinkercad, Google Sketch Up and Sculptris, all free 3D modeling programs. The 3D printer that this grant helped purchase was a Prusa I3 MK2. Here in my Bowen Elementary classroom we are turning our STEM programs into STEAM programs. Kindergarten to fifth grade students at three different elementary schools have already been exposed to this new technology.
As an artist and art teacher who has used computer technology to make art since the 90’s. I am amazed by this technology. One of my English Learners, who came here from the Sudan just two years ago, said as he was watching this 3D printer run. “This machine is drawing!!” Will this change the way he looks at the future? Yes it will, it already has. 13 years from now he will be graduating from college and his experience with this 3D printer will help prepare him for it.

Introduction
Hello! Welcome to my Art Teacher Website. Let me introduce myself, I am Jerry Berta. I started teaching at Kentwood Public Schools on September 8th, 2015. Last year I taught art to students at Ellington Academy Kindergarten to 10th grade. The 2 years before that I taught elementary art Muskegon Heights. Prior to that, I received my Visual Arts Teaching certificate from Aquinas College. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wayne State University. I spent the 30 or so years between my college runs making my living as a studio artist, and raising a family with my wonderful wife, Madeline Kaczmarczyk. Amy and Zachory, our children used their creative problem solving strengths in the world of science. Amy has a Doctorate of Physics and Zachory has a Doctorate of Astrophysics. In 2012, Zachory discovered a planet in another solar system while, studying at Harvard. (link to http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/news/2012-04) I have been fascinated with computers and technology since the 80's. I taught a Digitally Based Art class at Aquinas College. I have exhibited my artwork across the country at art fairs and galleries, One of my diner teapots is on exhibit at the Shigarki Ceramic Cultural Park Museum in Japan. I have exhibited in 6 out of the 7 Artprizes, the last two years were with the students from Muskegon Heights. "United Faces of Art" and "I Love My Beautiful Brain!" This years entry is titled "The Conversation ~ What would they say?" a 36 by 12 foot
I believe it takes two great passions to be an outstanding teacher, a passion for their subject and a passion for teaching. Working with clay has been my passion for over 30 years as I made my living as a studio artist. I thought I have always had a great passion for teaching; however now as a full time art teacher I get a much greater joy out of inspiring my students than I ever got from selling art.
